Great Expectations

By Graham R. Jones
In many ways 2004 was a tumultuous year. Sandwiched between the shock of Marco Pantani's death in February and the end of season 'Phonak affair' we have witnessed the UCI at the center of the 'drugs in cycling' issue as well as the UCI's own attempts to introduce the Pro-Tour. Yet the season was illuminated by tremendous achievements and heading these was the emergence of Italy's young Damiano Cunego who at the tender age of 23 won the Giro d'Italia and finished the year ranked #1 in the UCI world rider listing. Time will tell if he is to follow in Coppi's wheeltracks to become the next 'campionissimo'. While Armstrong's sixth straight TdF win met expectations, Davide Rebellin's unprecedented wins in April were not expected when he claimed the Amstel Gold, Fleche Wallone and L-B-L. Here we look back at 2004.

Controversy, Confusion, Commitment – the UCI’s ProTour

By Graham R. Jones
At the beginning of next month the Paris-Nice ushers in the ProTour as the first event on the 27 race calendar. There has been much controversy, confusion and even bitter exchanges in the war of words leading up to this program which is designed to lead cycling forward and into the 21st Century. While UCI President Hein Verbruggen has been the undoubted face of the UCI, it is perhaps Phonak team owner Andy Rihs (pictured on our front cover) together with the Grand Tour organizers who have been most visible in the struggles against the UCI. In our February feature article we take a look at this volatile issue.

Part I: Milan-San Remo:The Beginning, The Development
Part II: Coppi's Grand Journey

By Barry Boyce
Nearly a century has passed since the original idea created an International Cycling Classic. Unlike the other 5 Monuments of Cycling M-SR has not varied the race course significantly over the years. One change did occur after World War 2. As the road surfaces improved the race became a sprinters festival. In an effort to combat bunch sprints the organizers added the “Poggio di San Remo” in 1960. Relive some of the grand history of Milan-San Remo.

La Vuelta: A Colorful & Caliente History
By Graham R. Jones
