Flanders Gains in Popularity
Very bad weather greeted the riders for the 60th annual Tour of Flanders. Leon Devos rode through high winds and bitterly cold temperatures to claim the victory.
The popularity of Flanders had begun several years before. The race was challenging the more established spring classics for prestige. In 1922 the first foreign rider finished on the podium with Frenchman Francis Pelissier taking third place.
