New Belgian Star Makes His Mark
New stars of cycling were emerging as the war raged throughout Europe. Alberik ‘Briek' Schott took the 500 Franc midway preme and drove the pace of an 8 rider breakaway over the Kruisberg. Into a very strong headwind off the cold North Sea Schotte's brutal pace dwindled the lead group with only 6 riders surviving. At the velodrome in Gent Schotte sprinted away from the breakaway for a 5 second victory.
Special Note: filming of the Tour of Flanders took a giant step in 1942. Movie cameras were attached to the top of cars to catch the race on the road. Previously filming was only done from fixed positions.
