A Classic Flahute Wins Flanders
An early 4 rider breakaway included Hennie Kupier, Ludo Peters, Michel Pollentier, and Bernard Hinault. The elite breakaway began to tire and was caught on the climb of the Koppenberg.
The final selection formed just before Geraardsbergen and the brutal Muur. Michel Pollentier escaped the peloton and was joined by Walter Godefroot and Gregor Braun.
The breakaway held the lead coming into the finish in Meerbeke. 34 year old Walter Godefroot sprinted past Michel Pollentier for his second Flanders victory.
