De Bruyne's First L-B-L Victory

Alfred 'Fred' de Bruyne came to the 1956 Liege-Bastogne-Liege with the best fitness of his life. 20 kms from Liege Richard van Genechten, the Fleche Wallonne winner, jumped away. He was quickly joined by de Bruyne.

Working on team orders van Genechten refused to contribute to the breakaway. De Bruyne's fitness pulled the breakaway into Liege. When the sprint started de Bruyne held the lead all the way to the finish line. He claimed the L-B-L victory by several meters.
