Lapize Times Three
Two-time defending champion Octave Lapize (Fra) came to P-R with great ambitions. An unprecedented 3rd consecutive victory was on the line. From the start in Chatou the favorites were content to wait until the later stages of the race to attack. Through the mining region Lapize and Cyrille Van Hauwaert (Bel) pulled away from the lead group to set up a rematch of the previous year's 2-up sprint finish. However, bad luck came to Van Hauwaert when his rear tire punctured several kilometers from the finish. Lapize rolled away to easily claim his record setting 3rd consecutive P-R victory.
