•  USA - The patriotic song, based on the Francis Scott Key poem, the Star Spangled Banner was adopted as the National anthem.

•  San Francisco, USA - California gets government approval for the construction of the Bay Bridge, which will connect San Francisco and Oakland.

•  Ethiopia - Haile Selassie became the Emperor of Ethiopia (then Abyssinia).

Notable Deaths - Thomas Alva Edison, 1847-1931, the "Wizard of Menlo Park" died October 18. He was one of the greatest American inventors of all times, winning over 1,000 patents. His best-known inventions were: the record player, incandescent light bulb and motion picture camera.
