- January 19 - Actor Alec Baldwin was indicted by a grand jury on involuntary manslaughter charges over the 2021 fatal shooting on a movie set.

- March 26 - The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is struck by a Singapore-flagged cargo ship that has lost power, causing the 1.6-mile-long, 47-year-old structure to completely collapse and killing six maintenance workers.
- April 27 - Iraq's parliament criminalizes same-sex relationships, passing a law that allows for up to 15 years in prison.
- July 13 - While campaigning for the 2024 U.S. presidential election former US President Donald Trump survives an assassination attempt at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
- July 29 - British cyclist Tom Pidcock successfully defends his Olympic mountain bike cross country gold medal at the Paris Games with a time of 1:26:22.
- November 5 - Former Republican President Donald Trump is re-elected, defeating Kamala Harris to become only the second president elected to non-consecutive terms after Grover Cleveland in 1884 and 1892, and the oldest elected.
- December 4 - Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthCare, was shot and killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City. Alleged killer Luigi Mangione was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania and was charged with the murder of Thompson.

* Vuelta a Espana Champion: Rolf Wolfshohl (Ger) (1938-2024) German professional racing cyclist. Wolfshohl is best known for winning three World “cyclo-cross” Championships, and in road racing for winning the 1965 Vuelta a Espana. He died at 85.
* World Road Race Champion: Rik2 Van Looy (Bel) (1933-2024) Belgian professional cyclist who dominated the one-day Classics races. Van Looy was twice World Road Race Champion (1960, 1961). He was also the first racer to win all five of cycling’s 'Monuments' (M-SR 1958, Flanders 1959 and 62, P-R 1961 and 62, LBL 1961, Lombardia 1959). He died at 90.
Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2024) German soccer defender (103 caps; FIFA World Cup 1974; Bayern Munich 427 games; Ballon d'Or 1972, 76) and manager (FIFA World Cup 1990; Bayern Munich), died at 78.
O.J. Simpson (1947-2024) American College/Pro Football HOF running back (Heisman Trophy 1968 USC; NFL MVP 1973; 5 × First-team All-Pro & Pro Bowl; Buffalo Bills), broadcaster, and actor; found responsible Brown/Goldman deaths 1994, died of prostate cancer at 76.
Bill Walton (1952-2024) American Basketball Hall of Fame center (NBA Championship 1977, 1986; NBA Finals MVP 1977; Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics), died from cancer at 71.
Willie Mays (1931-2024) American Baseball Hall of Fame center fielder (24x MLB All Star; 12x Gold Glove Award; 660 career HRs, NL MVP 1954, 65; NY/SF Giants, NY Mets), died of heart failure at 93.
