Career Day for Hardiquest
The 20th edition of the Tour of Flanders was held April 5, 1936.
From the start in Gent an aggressive peloton saw early attacks, all were reeled in by the peloton.
Race favorite and 1934 winner Gaston Rebry (Alcyon) attacked on the Kwaremont (200 km / 250 km), quickly gaining a gap of a minute. The Belgian strongman ran out of food and began to struggle. Four chasers caught the leader. Rebry feeling the “hunger knock” lost contact with the group and abandoned the race.
Louis Hardiquest (De Dion - Bouton), Edgard De Caluwe (Dilecta - Wolber), Francois Neuville (Helyett - Hutchinson), and Cyriel Van Overberghe (F. Pelissier - Mercier) rode into the Wetteren finish to contend for the victory.
The quartet launched a brilliant sprint. Louis Hardiquest (Bel) proved to be the fastest, he crossed the finish line first and claimed the prestigious Tour of Flanders victory.
Edgard de Caluwe (Bel), Francois Neuville (Bel) finish second and third, respectively.
