| The "Flying" Dutchman
The 37th edition of the Tour of Flanders was held April 5, 1953.
This edition will be remembered for its tight sprint finish.
Race Status:
An early breakaway of three riders controlled the first half of the race. The peloton reconnected with the trio at the 136 km mark.
Wim Van Est (Locomotief) attacked and Désiré Keteleer (Bianchi) quickly responded. The final selection rode away.
The duo held off a strong chasing group and reached the finish in Wetteren together. Van Est proved fastest in the sprint and nipped Keteleer at the line.
Holland's Wim Van Est rode an inspired race to become the first Dutchman to win the prestigious Tour of Flanders.
