Binda Out Duels Girardengo

22-year-old Alfredo Binda battled the Campionissimo Constante Girardengo through five stages before taking the 1925 Giro d'Italia lead. Girardengo continued attacking the young race leader in the mountains, but Binda matched every breakaway. After Binda took the race lead on stage 5 Girardengo scored four more stage wins but could not break the will of the young and exceptionally talented Binda.

In Milan Alfredo Binda claimed his first Giro d'Italia victory.

There were six trade teams that competed in the race:

  • Aliprandi-Pirelli
  • Jenis
  • Legnano-Pirelli
  • Olympia-Pirelli
  • Atala-Automoto
  • Wolsit-Pirelli

The peloton was completely composed of Italians, which was a trend that continued until the 1950s because of Italy's fascist policies and the harsh political climate. 1925 marked Alfredo Binda’s first entry into the Giro d'Italia.

Race Summary:

Stage 1: 278 km from Milan to Torino, eighteen riders including all the contenders broke away from the pack and contested the sprint in Torino. Pietro Linari won the sprint and took the GC lead.

Stage 2: a 4-rider group sped into Arenzano with Costante Girardengo taking the stage win and moving into the race lead. Young Alfredo Binda was second in the GC.

Stage 3: Teamwork, race leader Girardengo successfully help devoted teammate beat Binda for the stage win. Gaetano Belloni, a Girardengo teammate and former Giro winner, finished sixteen minutes down.

He was resentful over Girardengo’s efforts on behalf of a gregario (team helper) when he, as former Giro winner, was struggling and deserved help.

Stage 5: 260 km from Rome to Napoli, Girardengo flatted on stage 5, a resentful Belloni took advantage of his teammates misfortune and helped Binda break away. Belloni won the stage while Binda gaining 32 seconds, came in second and became the new Giro leader.

Stage 7: The hilly stage from Bari to Benevento saw an aggressive Girardengo drop Binda and won the stage and gained 28 seconds in the GC. Binda was still the race leader with Girardengo now second, but still five minutes behind in the GC.

Stage 8: Girardengo’s relentless attacking could not drop Binda. Both finished the stage with the same time.

Stage 10 to 12: Girardengo scored 3 of 4 stage wins but always had Binda close behind.

In Milan Alfredo Binda defeated Italy’s Grand Campionissimo Costante Girardengo. The young Binda scored his first Giro d’Italia victory in 1925.
