SPECIAL NOTE: The Giro in 1929 began in Rome for only the second time. This Giro would finish in Milan after 14 stages raced around Italy.

Race Summary:
Stage 1: 235 km from Rome to Napoli, starting a solid race Gaetano Belloni, who had been a great professional racer for fourteen years, took the sprint in Naples from a 10-rider breakaway.
Stage 2: 185 km from Napoli to Foggia, the stage crossed the climbs in the Apennines on the way to Foggia. Alfredo Binda took the stage win from a 17-rider breakaway. Belloni held the race lead.
Stage 2 to 9: Binda went on to set a Giro record of consecutive stage wins! From stage 2 to stage 9 Binda recorded eight straight stage wins.
SPECIAL NOTE: The Giro’s southern this year made for an extremely difficult race. At the end of the 1920s, most roads in Italy’s ‘deep south’ were still unpaved. The race was also plagued by loose animals, difficulty in finding lodging, scarce gasoline for the cars and even trouble getting safe water for the riders.
Stage 4: Stage four went through the rugged southern countryside of Puglia and Basilicata, and it proved to be Belloni’s undoing. He lost over six minutes. The lead was handed to Binda.
Stage 5: Belloni continued to lose time on stage 5, losing an hour and his final hope for a high GC placing.
Stage 5: 198 km from Formia to Rome, Sadly Belloni’s luck got worse. He crashed and lost 14 minutes. He managed to remount and began a furious chase. While ascending a climb into the Town of Ferentino a young boy jumped in front of the chasing pack. Belloni ran straight into him, killing the boy. Overwhelmed by the tragedy he climbed off the bike and abandoned the race.
Stage 13: Binda took the thirteenth stage, but race judges ruled that the first four; Binda, Piemontesi, Negrini and Alfredo Dinale, had not sprinted fairly. The fifth placed rider, Mario Bianchi, won the stage.
Stage 14: Binda finished second on the final stage into Milan and recorded his 4th Giro victory.
SPECIAL NOTE: Binda’s 1929 victory did not come without emotional pain. When the Giro ended in Milan, Binda heard boos from the tifosi, who were tired of his domination of the Giro. Binda had been the subject of abuse before, but after this Giro he shaken by the crowd’s reaction in 1929. He retired to the Legnano team van to weep in private. La Gazzetta said that his “crime” was being superior to all the other riders in the race.
