First Foreign Winner of the Giro

History was made at the 1950 Giro d'Italia when Hugo Koblet (Sui) became the first foreign rider to gain the top step of the podium.

Pre-Race Notes:

The "Big Three" or "Italian Tripod" Gino Bartali (Bartali), Fausto Coppi (Bianchi-Ursus), and Fiorenzo Magni (Wilier Triestina) were on the “star studded” start list.

Additionally, this was the first Giro to feature non-Italian riders as team captains. 1947 Tour de France winner Jean Robic (Viscontea-Ursus), Fritz Schar (Arbos-Talbot), and Ferdinand Kubler (Frejus-Superga) entered as sole leaders of their respective squads.

The Giro organization stated in January 1950 that there would not be more than 100 riders starting the race. Subsequently, fifteen teams (seven riders each) entered the race.

  • Bianchi-Ursus
  • Legnano-Pirelli
  • Cimatti
  • Arbos-Talbot
  • Bartali-Gardiol
  • Benotto-Superga

Classification Leadership:

The leader of the General Classification, calculated by adding each stage times of each rider and subtracting time bonuses, wore the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey).

The Mountains Classification was contested on various mountain climbs to the riders who crossed them first accumulated “climbing points.”

There was a Maglia Nera (Black Jersey) awarded to the rider placed last in the GC.

Two new Jersey awarded:

The Green Jersey was given to the highest ranked non-Italian cyclist in the General Classification.

The White Jersey given to the highest ranked independent cyclist in the General Classification.

Race Summary:

Stage 6: Koblet broke away with Gino Bartali on stage 6 from Torino to Lugano, dropped Bartali and soloed for the stage win.

Stage 8: Two stages later he took the Maglia Rosa after an attack on the Pian delle Fugazze.

Stage 9: Pre-race favorite for victory Fausto Coppi, trailing by 3’58” in the GC, crashed heavily on stage 9 and abandoned the race with a broken pelvis.

Stage 18: Hugo Koblet cruised into Milan for the Giro victory. Koblet completed his domination of the race by also winning the Mountain Classification.
