Balmamion's Giro Victory with NO Stage Wins

SPECIAL NOTE: There were no Individual Time Trials on the Giro’s 1962 race schedule.
SPECIAL NOTE: The organizers in 1962 designed a racecourse to include a high number of tourist locations.

Race Summary:
Stage 2- Franco Balmamion of the Carpano team failed to eat enough during the stage and lost more than ten minutes. His Giro hopes were gone... (?)
Stage 14- The fourteenth stage in the Dolomite Mountains experienced terrible weather. This was perhaps the worst "stage weather" in the history of the Giro. Fifty-seven (57!!!) riders abandoned the Giro. In the extremely cold weather race leader Armand Desmet rode the stage without enough warm clothing, he lost 18 minutes. Graziano Battistini inherited the Maglia Rosa.
Stage 15- Franco Balmamion languished in tenth place and trailed in the GC by 8’49”.
Stage 16- Balmamion used the finishing climb to Pian dei Resinelli to gain 4’26” on the race leader Battistini. He now trailed by 4’23” in the GC.
Stage 17- After his second stage time losses Balmamion slowly chipped away at the race leader and slowly regained time. On the seventeenth stage Balmamion got into an eleven-rider breakaway, which went on to win the stage. He finished eleventh on the stage but the time gain of 6’44” gave him the Maglia Rosa with four stages to the finish in Milan.
Stage 20: A 238 km stage on a mountainous circuit around Saint Vincent Balmamion put the race out of reach. Through the valley he dropped second placed Graziano Battistini and finished fourth on the stage. He gained an additional 6’07”.
Stage 21: In Milan Franco Balmamion won the Giro victory without a single stage win.
