A Stelvio Showdown
The 1975 Giro d'Italia was the 58th running of Italy’s Grand Tour.
An Italian version of the 1956 Tour de France’s Roger Walkowiak, little known Fausto Bertoglio fought “tooth and nail” to hold his race lead until the end.
Teams:
The ten teams entering the race were:
- Molteni (late withdrawal) *
- Bianchi-Campagnolo
- Brooklyn
- Furzi-FT
- Frisol-GBC
|
- Kas-Kaskol
- SCIC
- Jolly Ceramica
- Magniflex
- Zonca
|
Each team sent a squad of ten riders. A tenth team was invited but Eddy Merckx's Molteni team dropped out at the last minute.*
Race Summary:
Stage 4 to 20- Belgian Roger de Vlaeminck had seven stage wins (stg. 4, 6, 7b, 10, 11, 18, 20).
Stage 13- Italian Giovanni Battaglin took the race lead after the stage 13 Individual Time Trial. He beat race leader Francisco Galdos by 3’03” to inherit the Maglia Rosa.
Stage 14- The next day Fausto Bertoglio took the race lead after the 28 km Mountain Time Trial. He beat Battaglin by 1’48” and put on the Maglia Rosa.
Stage 15 to 21- Bertoglio and his Jolly Ceramica teammates controlled the race until the unusual final stage, which finished on the climb of the Passo del Stelvio.
Stage 21- Spanish climber trialed Bertoglio by 41” as the final stage began. On the Stelvio Galdos attacked multiple times, but Bertoglio answered every time. Galdos won the stage and the Cima Coppi, but with a stubborn race leader glued to his wheel. Bertoglio retained the Maglia Rosa. He gained the biggest win of his career with the 1975 Giro d’Italia victory!!!
Stage 21 (Cima Coppi): The 1975 Cima Coppi came on the final stage (21) that ended on the summit of the Passo Stelvio. At the start of the last stage in Alleghe Francisco Galdos trailed race leader Fausto Bertoglio by only 41 seconds. Before the finish on the Stelvio there was little action on either the San Pellegrino or the Passo di Costalunga. When the Stelvio final started Galdos launched multiple attacks, but Bertoglio was able to match him every time. Bertoglio attacked near the summit, this time Galdos chased him down. The duo crossed the line together. Galdos won the stage and the Cima Coppi. Bertoglio won the Giro!
