General Classification

Bugno won the prologue time trial and held the overall lead from the first to the last stage. Gianni Bugno’s grand accomplishment matched the exploits of three Campionissimos:

  • Alfredo Binda (1927)
  • Eddy Merckx (1973)

SPECIAL NOTE: Greg LeMond, reigning World Road Champion, raced in the Giro as training for the Tour de France. Notably LeMond finished in 105th place in the Giro and went on to win the Tour de France.

Race Route:

The Giro d'Italia 1990 race route was revealed on television in Milan on December 16, 1989. Race director Vincenzo Torriani announced the race schedule was moved forward by one week to not overlap with the Soccer World Cup being held in Italy.

Race Summary:

Prologue: Gianni Bugno blistered the 13 km prologue and took the first Maglia Rosa of 1990. He had set the stage for a great battle, but could he climb with the Grand Tour contenders?

Stage 5: 200 km from Teramo to Fabriano, took the peloton through a dimly lit tunnel. A large crash in the tunnel took Laurent Fignon down heavily, while Bugno came through unscathed. Bugno and his team came out of the tunnel significantly ahead and slowed the pace to let the fallen Frenchman reconnect with the lead group. Fignon, suffering from a painful dislocated hip, was determined to continue.

Stage 7: The Giro’s hard racing started with sixth stage. The stage’s route was hilly and the final climb up to Vallombrosa was a 20 km ascent with sections of a 12% gradient. The race leader started attacking early on the stage shattering the peloton. Only four contenders could hold the Bugno’s wheel. In Vallombrosa the Maglia Rosa won the sprint and finished 1’18” ahead of a suffering Fignon and more than 25 minutes in front of Greg LeMond.

Stage 8: History was made when Vladimir Poulnikov crossed the finish line first in Langhirano and became the first Russian to win a stage at the Giro. The stage featured cold temperatures and rain throughout the race. An injured Laurent Fignon surrendered to the pain and abandoned the Giro on stage 8.

Stage 16: (Cima Coppi): The sixteenth stage featured 6 major mountain climbs:

1. Passo Valparola
2. Val Gardena
3. Passo del Sella
4. Passo Pordoi (1st pass),
5. Marmolada
6. Passo Pordoi (2nd pass)

The Italian rider Maurizio Vandelli was the first atop Passo Pordoi on the 1st passage. On the fifth climb, the Marmolada, Charly Mottet attacked and took the race leader Gianni Bugno with him. The duo worked well together and on the 2nd time to the summit of the Pordoi Bugno gifted the stage win to the Frenchman.

Stage 19: After a dominating performance from “start to finish” Gianni Bugno rode into Milan to claim the Giro d’Italia victory. He joined an elite group, Costante Girardengo (GdI 1919), Alfredo Binda (GdI 1927), and Eddy Merckx (GdI 1973), to wear the Maglia Rosa from start to finish!!!

Doping:

Dutchman Gert-Jan Theunisse, who had tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone in April, came to the Giro waiting for the results of the B sample. When the B sample confirmed the April positive test, riders staged a strike. The riders stated they would not race if Theunisse was allowed to continue in the Giro. After negotiations an agreement was reached, the Dutchman would ride passively if allowed to race. He did and finished the race in fifteenth place, +28’43” behind the winner.
