Race Summary:

Stage 14: (Cima Coppi): Again, this year the 1993 Giro d’Italia presented the Passo Pordoi as the Cima Coppi. The award featured on the fourteenth stage, a big 245 km loop starting and ending in Corvara. The stage included five major mountain climbs: Passo di Costalunga, Passo Pordoi (1st passage), Passo di Fedaia, Passo Pordoi (2nd passage)and Passo di Campolongo.

Race leader Bruno Leali rode with a small breakaway group. Miguel Indurain surged on the climb and passed the summit of the Pordoi first. Claudio Chiappucci caught Indurain and won the stage. Leali faded and came to the finish +4’53” behind Chiappucci/Indurain group and lost the Maglia Rosa to Indurain.

Stage 19: Indurain contained his opponents in the mountains and dominated them in the time trials. Stubbornly Piotr Ugrumov (Let) refused to accept Indurain's waltz to victory in 1993 and launched repeated attacks in the mountains. Indurain had an answer for every attack through nineteen stages.

Stage 20: Ugrumov's aggressive climbing finally managed to crack Indurain on twentieth stage. By the stage finish on the summit of the Oropa the Spaniard did lose time but he managed to close the time gap, losing only 36 seconds to Ugrumov. His time loss was not enough to give up the race lead.

Stage 21: A second consecutive Giro d'Italia victory was his one stage later in Milan.

SPECIAL NOTE: Miguel Indurain’s victory the Giro in 1993 set-up his second opportunity to accomplish a “Giro/Tour” double victory in the same year.
