Rominger Untouchable
The 1995 Giro d'Italia was the 78th edition of Italy’s Grand Tour.
The 1995 Giro start list did not include talented Italian climber Marco Pantani (suffering from a training injury earlier in the year) or former Giro champion Miguel Indurain, who needed rest before the Tour de France.
Special Note: The “Young Rider” (White Jersey) classification was not contested between the years of 1995 and 2006. In 2007 the classification was re-introduced and has been in each Giro since.

Race Summary:
Stage 1: Italian superstar sprinter Mario “Cipo” Cipollini took the first stage win and the Maglia Rosa in Terni.
Stage 2: Cipo’s race lead was short when Switzerland’s Tony Rominger took full control of the race on the 19 km Individual Time Trial. Once in the Maglia Rosa Rominger never looked back. Contenders and Gewiss-Ballan teammates, Evgeni Berzin and Piotr Ugrumov, never mounted a serious challenge to Rominger. The two spent most of the Giro attacking each other.
Stage 7: 216 km from Taranto to Terme Luigiane, Maurizio Fondriest sprinted past the race leader for the stage win.
Stage 8: This stage presented an 18 km climb to the finish on Monte Sirino. The stage held the potential to be a GC changer. Rominger met every challenge. A small breakaway group escaped on the Monte Sirino. Laudelino Cubino jumped away late to gain the stage win. Rominger finished 7th 1’42” behind. Cubino moved into third place overall. Main contenders Berzin and Fondriest both lost valuable time on the GC.
Stage 19 *: (Cima Coppi): Cold temperatures, rain, and snow presented on stage 19. The original stage 19 from Mondovì to Briançon (Fra) had to be rescheduled due to an avalanche on the Colle dell'Agnello Pass (site of the Cima Coppi). As a result, the riders had to finish the stage in Chianale di Ponte Chianale, where the day’s ‘Intergiro sprint was scheduled. It would serve as an emergency finish to the stage after only 129.9 km of racing.
The previous day a heavy snow storm made the road impassable and the climb for the Cima Coppi was cancelled.
Stage 22: Tony Rominger rode into Milan for a very dominating Giro d’Italia victory. Evgeni Berzin (Rus) and Piotr Ugrumov (Let) finished second and third respectively.
