The 35th edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege was held on May 1, 1949.
Powerful Frenchman Camille Danguillaume (Peugeot), suffered an unfortunate late puncture in 1948, returned to L-B-L in 1949 with unfinished business.
Camille Danguillaume (Peugeot) led Adolf Verschueren (Mercier), Roger Gyselinck (Groene), Willy Kemp (Garin), Maurits Meersman (Ganna), and Pino Cerami (Ganna) onto the finishing straight.
Danguillaume jumped early and sprinted away from the 6-rider breakaway. The Frenchman gained the huge L-B-L victory.
Danguillaume became the first foreign winner since 1930 German Hermann Buse in 1930.
SAD SPECIAL NOTE: Tragically, Camille Danguillaume (Fra) died while racing in the French National Championship on June 22, 1950. He collided with two media motorcycles resulting in a severe head injury. He died four days late. The incident prompted discussions with cycling organizers to implement safer "vehicle management" during the race.
SPECIAL NOTE: After retiring from his cycling career, Emile Masson jr (who placed 7th in 1949), became president of the Pesant Club Liégeois. He played a major role in promoting Liege-Bastogne-Liege for many years.
