Fantastic Breakaway!!!
The 39th edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege was held on May 3, 1953.
Race Status:
Belgian strongman Alois de Hertog (Alcyon) broke away at the turn in Bastogne.
The Belgian rode solo for 156 kms back into Liege.
Mercier teammates Maurice Diot (Fra) and Raoul Remy (Fra) chased but could not close on de Hertog.
Alois de Hertog, a Belgian climber, crossed the finish line with a 5’51” advantage and claimed the 1953 L-B-L victory.
SPECIAL NOTE: Switzerland's Ferdi Kubler (Fiorelli), two-time L-B-L defending champion, finished 14th, 6’54” behind the winner.
