                - January 1 - First Day of the 21st  Century: January 1, 2000 marked the first day of the 21st century and  the start of a new millennium according to the Western calendar system. 
 
                 
                 
              
                - January 21 - NFL linebacker Ray Lewis was involved  in a fight resulting in the deaths of Jacinth Baker and Richard Lollar. Lewis arrested  and indicted 11 days later for murder and assault. The murder charges were later  dropped.
 
                 
               
              
                - * April 22 - In a pre-dawn raid, federal  agents seize six-year-old Elián González from his relatives' home in  Miami, Florida after a family dispute. Elián came to the USA on an inner-tube  and was granted temporary permission to stay in the U.S. and placed him with  his great-uncle, Lázaro González.
 
                 
               
              
                - April 22 - The Big Number Change takes place in the United Kingdom. The change addressed various issues with the  “telephone dialing plan” in the United Kingdom, during the late 1990s  and early 2000s, when the country was running short of new telephone numbers.
 
                 
               
              
                - * June 28 - Two months after being seized by  federal agents, Cuban exile Elián González returns to his father in Cuba  following a Supreme Court order.
 
                 
               
              
                - October 5 - Bulldozer Revolution: Massive demonstrations in Belgrade culminated in the resignation of Serbian  strongman Slobodan Milošević. The event is often called the Bulldozer  Revolution.

                - November 7 - Bush vs. Gore: Following  numerous recounts of the votes in the US Presidential election between George W.  Bush and Al Gore, it was deemed to be inconclusive. The results of the Florida  recounts all came in Bush's favor and led to a court case. The results were  eventually decided by the Supreme Court. 
 
                 
               
              
                - December  12 - Bush  vs. Gore: US Supreme  Court releases its 5-4 decision settling the recount dispute in Florida's 2000  presidential election in George W. Bush's favor.

                * Tour de France and Giro d'Itala Champion: Gino "the Pious" Bartali (Ita), (1914-2000), died May 5, 2000. He was the 1938 TdF Champion, 1948 TdF Champion, 1936 Giro d'Italia, 1937 Giro d'Italia, and 1946 Giro d'Italia, and won 9 Grand Tour KoM classifications.   
                * Vuelta a Espana Champion: Jean Dotto (Fra), (1928-2000), died February 20, 2000. He was the first French cyclist to win the Vuelta a Espana, 1955 Vuelta a Espana, He rode the Tour de France 13 times.  
                Victor Borge (1909-2000)  Danish and American actor, comedian, and pianist who achieved great popularity on  radio and television in both North America and Europe. He died December 23, 2000  in Greenwich, Connecticut at the age of 91.
