- January 26 - Condoleezza Rice is sworn in as U.S. Secretary of State, the first African American woman to hold the post.
- April 19 - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger elected Pope Benedict XVI on the second day of the Papal Conclave.
- * July 7 - Bombing of 7/7: Three Islamic terrorists separately detonated three homemade bombs aboard London Underground trains, and a fourth terrorist detonated another bomb on a double-decker bus. 52 people of 18 different nationalities were killed and nearly 800 were injured in the attacks.
- * July 21 - Two weeks after the bombing of 7/7, four Islamic terrorists again targeted London's public transportation system. This time all four bombs fail to detonate leading to the capture of all the bombers.
- August 29 - Hurricane Katrina made its second and third landfall as a Category 3 hurricane. Katrina devastated much of the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, killing more than 1,836 people and causing over $115 billion in damage.
- November 22 - Angela Merkel became the first female Chancellor of Germany

Johnny Carson (1925-2005) American comedian and TV host (The Tonight Show, Who Do You Trust), died of respiratory failure arising from emphysema at 79.
Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) 264th Roman Catholic Pope (served 1978-2005), died of heart failure at 84.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005) American civil rights activist, who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger, died of natural causes at 92.
Notable Deaths in Sports -
* Tour de France/Giro d’Italia Champion: Charly Gaul (1932-2005) Luxembourg cyclist won the Tour de France 1958 and Giro d’Italia 1956, 1959. He died Dec 6 at the age of 73.
* World Road Race Champion: Theo Middelkamp (1914-2005) Dutch road cyclist. Middelkamp became 1947 World Road Race Champion. In 1936 he was the first ever Dutch cyclist to win a stage in the Tour de France. He died at 91.
Max Schmeling (1905-2005) German boxer (world heavyweight champion 1930-32) died Feb 2 at 99.
