  • October 9 - North Korea conducted its first nuclear test with an estimated yield of between 0.4 and 2 kilotons.
  • November 5 - Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, along with co-defendants Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, were sentenced to death in the al-Dujail trial for their role in the 1982 massacre of 148 Shiites from Dujail.

Don Knotts (1924-2006) American actor/comedian (Andy Griffth Show, 3's Company), died of lung cancer at 81.

Alvis "Buck" Owens (1929-2006) an American country singer/songwriter ("Under Your Spell Again"), a bandleader (The Buckaroos - "Act Naturally"), and TV personality (Hee Haw), died of an apparent heart attack at 76.

Steve Irwin (1962-2006) Australian naturalist and TV personality (known as The Crocodile Hunter), attacked and killed by a stingray at 44.

James Brown (1933-2006) legendary American R&B, gospel, soul and funk singer-songwriter, known as 'The Godfather of Soul' (song: "Sex Machine"; "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag"; "Hot Pants"), died of heart failure December 25 at 73.

Gerald Ford (1913-2006) 38th US President (1974-77) and 41st US Vice President (1973-74), died at 93.

Saddam Hussein (1937-2006) President of Iraq (1979-2003) was tried and found guilty of crimes against humanity and executed by hanging in Baghdad at the age of 69.

Floyd Patterson (1935-2006) American boxing champion (world heavyweight champion 1956-59, 1960-62, Olympic Gold 1952), died of prostate cancer at 71.

Byron Nelson (1912-2006) American golfer (winner 5 major titles; record 19 tournaments in 1945), died of a blood disorder at 94.

Red Auerbach (1917-2006) a Basketball HOF head coach (won 9 NBA championships; NBA Coach of the Year 1965 Boston Celtics; 11 x NBA All-Star Game HC) and as an executive (President Boston Celtics 7× NBA C'ship), died of a heart attack at 89.
