** April 15 - Boston Marathon bombing: Two Chechnya-born Islamic brothers detonate two “pressure cookers” bombs at the Boston Marathon finish line in Boston, Massachusetts. The explosion killed 3 people and injuring 264 others.

** April 17 - the FBI sought the public’s help in identifying grainy surveillance images of two young men thought to be the perpetrators. The search took a violent turn just hours later when brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev shot and killed an MIT police officer. They then exchanged fire with police as they tried to escape in a hijacked SUV. Tamerlan, 26, was killed in the fracas; his younger brother, Dzhokhar, 19, managed to escape.

May - The IRS Targeting Controversy: Under the Obama administration, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) illegally overreached in targeting for increased scrutiny conservative nonprofits groups with words like “Tea Party” in their name. President Obama was facing a major political scandal, but within days, the IRS’ acting commissioner resigned. Republicans were calling for Obama’s impeachment. Obama maintained he had no knowledge of the policy. The impeachment process didn’t happen

October 1 - Obamacare’s Bungled ACA Rollout: The passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) may have been President Barack Obama’s greatest triumph, BUT its roll-out was his greatest failure. The launch of the federal website for purchasing private insurance coverage through a ‘government-operated’ (?) exchange was an unmitigated disaster! A combination of technical glitches, high demand and faulty coding rendered healthcare.gov barely usable for its first month of operation.

December 12 - The United States announced sanctions on the two dozen companies who assisted Iran with their nuclear program
December 29 - 7-time World F1 (motor racing) Champion Michael Schumacher suffers a serious head injury in a ski accident in the French Alps. After lifesaving surgery in 2013, his condition remains unclear in present times.
Notable Deaths -
Amy Dombroski (USA) (1987-2013) an American professional cyclist, who competed in cyclocross (NC 2010, 2012, 2013), road (NC U23 2009), and mountain bike (NC 2009) racing. She was struck by a truck during a moto-paced training ride in Belgium.
Miguel Poblet (1928-2013), Spanish cyclist from 1944 to 1962, he was the first Spanish rider to wear the race leader’s yellow jersey in the Tour de France, he had over 200 professional victories, and in 1956 he became the first of only three riders to win stages in the three Grand Tours in the same year. He died at 85.
Stan Musial (1920-2013) American Baseball HOF outfielder, who was 24 x MLB All-Star; played in the World Series 1942, 44, 46; NL MVP 1943, 46, 48; 7 x NL batting champion; and played for the St Louis Cardinals. He died from Alzheimer's disease at 92.
Margaret “Iron Lady” Thatcher (1925-2013) British Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, died of a stroke at 87.
