  • February 12 - Former New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin was found guilty on corruption charges and sentenced to ten years in prison.

  • February 16 - American Bode Miller (age 36) became the oldest medalist in Olympic alpine skiing history when he tied for bronze in the super-G in Sochi.

  • Turmiol in Ukraine 2014:

    February 18 - Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity: Ukrainian Revolution of 2014 began as protesters, riot police and unknown shooters took part in violent events in the capital, Kiev. The results of the event culminated after five days in the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych.

    February 19 - Death toll in Ukraine reached 26 after a government crackdown on protesters.

    February21 - Police in Kiev open fire on protesters with 27 killed and more than 570 injured.

    February 22 - Yanukovych Ousted: Viktor Yanukovych was ousted as President of Ukraine by the Parliament following the democratic mass-movement called the “Euromaidan Revolution”.

    February 27 - Republic of Crimea announced a referendum and ousted its regional government.

    February 27 - Unmarked Russia special forces invade neighboring Crimea to assist pro-Russian nationalists. They occupied government buildings in preparation for annexation.

    March 18 - Russian Annexation of Crimea: Following the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine, Russia annexed Crimea after a disputed referendum. This action escalated tensions and led to ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine, marking a significant geopolitical crisis.

    March 27 - UN General Assembly condemned Russia's annexation of Crimea.

  • March 8 - Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: The mysterious disappearance of Flight MH370, with 239 people on board, sparked numerous conspiracy theories and remains one of aviation's greatest mysteries.

  • June 3 - US President Barack Obama announced his plan for a $1 billion fund to increased deployment of US troops to Europe.

  • August 8 - Ebola Outbreak: West African saw the most widespread outbreak of the Ebola virus in history. The outbreak is categorized as an international concern and prompted a ‘public health emergency declaration’ by the World Health Organization (WHO) in August.

  • August 11 - Death of Robin Williams: Robin Williams (1951-2014) beloved actor and comedian, struggled with severe depression before his death from suicide. His death prompted widespread mourning and discussions about mental health.

  • September 30 - A case of Ebola Virus reached Dallas, Texas.

  • October 14 - World Health Organization announce Ebola virus death toll at 4,447, and the fatality rate has reached 70%.

  • November 8 - Mikhail Gorbachev warned that tensions between America and Russia over Ukraine have put the world on the brink of a new Cold War.
  • December 2 - Stephen Hawking claimed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be a "threat to mankind" and spell the end of the human race.

Notable Deaths -

* Vuelta a Espana Champion: Francisco Gabicacogeascoa (Spa) (1937-2014) professional road bicycle racer from 1961 to 1972. Gabica is most famous for winning the 1966 Vuelta a Espana. He died at the age of 76.

Shirley Temple (1928-2014) American actress and diplomat, she was a famous 1930s child star (Bright Eyes, Heidi), died of natural causes at 85.

Phil Everly (1939-2014) American rock and roll singer-guitarist from The Everly Brothers ("Bye, Bye Love"; "Wake Up Little Susie"; "When WIll I Be Loved"), died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at 74.

Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) American Emmy award-winning actor (Boys Town, The Black Stallion), died at 93.
