Vermandel's Fast Finish
The 5th edition of the Tour of Flanders was held on March 13, 1921. Ninety riders came to the start line in Gent and thirty-two finished on the Arsenal Velodrome in Gentbrugge.
Defending champion Jules Van Hevel seemed eager to repeat as the Flanders champion. Aggressively a breakaway group of six formed with pre-race favorite Van Hevel leading the group.
The defending champion dominated the race throughout but could not shake a persistent Rene Vermandel in the closing kilometers. On the final laps of the velodrome, Vermandel used superior sprinting speed to beat Van Hevel by half-a-wheel.
