Verschueren Continues Belgian Supremacy at Flanders
The 10th edition of Tour of Flanders was held on March 21, 1926. The race went for 217 km from Gent to the velodrome in Gent (Citadel Park).
SPECIAL NOTE: The course featured two categorized ‘bergs’ (climbs):
At the start a confident French star Andre Leducq came to take on the ‘sprinters’ and ‘rouleurs’ of the Belgian peloton. The race left the start at a pace that few riders could follow. Leducq and 1924 Flanders champion Gerard Debaets struggled with the aggressive pace, both riders were dropped and abandoning the race.
Gaston Rebry (Bel) led a 7-rider breakaway into the Citadel Park Velodrome in Gent. Battling through the pack Denis Verschueren (Ravat-Wonder) out-sprinted Gustaaf van Slembroeck (Automoto-Hutchinson) and Raymond Decorte (J.B. Louvet-Pouchois) for a hard-fought victory!
SPECIAL NOTE: an average speed of 30.830 km/h marked the first edition of the race to achieve an average speed 30.830 km/h.
