Bonduel Survives Brutal Road Conditions
Cobbles, cobbles, and more cobbles…The 14th edition of the Tour of Flanders was held April 13, 1930. The ninety-two riders who started in 1930 met with tough cobbled climbs and brutal cobbled road conditions.
SPECIAL NOTE: The route featured an increased number of cobbled sections that were merely narrow "farm paths".
SPECIAL NOTE: The 1930 edition of Flanders added a 4th berg (hill), with the first ascent of the Kerselareberg. The new berg came in Edelare (aka small parish of Kerselare) (Total bergs 4).
- Kwaremont
- Tiegemberg
- Kruisberg
- Kerselareberg
Strong rouleur and sprinter Frans Bonduel (Dilecta-Wolber), two-time winner of Paris-Brussels, rode smoothly through the difficult cobbled sections and climbs. He made his decisive move on the cobbled Kwaremont climb with only one rider able to follow.
Late in the race an untimely puncture struck his breakaway companion, who lost contact with the leader. The powerful Bonduel rode solo into the finish in Wetteren.
Frans Bonduel won the prestigious Tour of Flanders victory.
