Race Summary:
Stage 12- Hinault dominated the twelfth stage to Campitello Matese and took back the overall race lead.
Stage 17- Five stages later Hinault was isolated and struggled to follow a 4-rider breakaway on stage 17, which was led by second placed Silvano Contini. Hinault lost 2’10” in Boario Terme. The race lead went to Contini.
Stage 18- The next day was the tough eighteenth stage from Piamborno to Monte Campione. Hinault would not be denied and rode away for the stage win, over 2 minutes ahead of a tired race leader Silvano Contini. The Maglia Rosa came back to Hinault.
Stage 21 (Cima Coppi): In 1982 the penultimate Giro stage 21 was a monster: It was a 254 km from Cuneo to Pinerolo and featured five major climbs: Maddelena, Col de Vars (Fra), Col d’Izoard (Fra & Cima Coppi), Montgenèvre (Fra), and Sestriere. KoM leader Lucien Van Impe rode across the summit of the BRUTAL Izoard first and took the 1982 Cima Coppi.
SPECIAL NOTE: This was the same route used on the historic 1949 Giro stage 17, where Fausto Coppi rode away from Gino Bartali. He beat 2nd place Gino Bartali by 11’58”.
Stage 22- Leaving no doubt about his victory Bernard Hinault won the final stage time trial in Torino and secured the 1982 Giro d’Italia victory.
Special Note: After winning the 1982 Giro d'Italia Bernard Hinault went on to win the Tour de France. He finally achieved the coveted “Giro/Tour Double” victory.
