The Fastest Giro

The 1983 Giro d'Italia was the 66th edition of Italy’s Grand Race.

Route Map

Start List

General Classification

The course in 1983 designed to be easy and led to it being raced at a record speed of 38.937 km/h (beating the Giro 1957- 37.488 km/h).

Italy’s reigning World Champion Giuseppe Saronni was deemed the odds-on favorite to win the 1983 Giro by the enthusiastic, cycling crazy tifosi.

The time bonuses awarded for top three stages finishes would play a huge part in General Classification.

Not known for time trialing ability or climbing strength in the mountains Saronni used his all-round talent to hold off the charge of Roberto Visentini.

Teams:

The presentation of the teams took place at the Piazza della Loggia in Brescia on May 10, 1983. Television coverage of the presentation went out to Italy.

The eighteen teams entering the race were:

  • Alfa Lum-Olmo
  • Atala-Campagnolo
  • Bianchi-Piaggio
  • Malvor-Bottecchia
  • Del Tongo-Colnago
  • Dromedario-Alan-Sidermec
  • Gis Gelati-Campagnolo
  • Europ Decor-Dries-Eddy Merckx
  • Zor-Helios-Gemeaz Cusin
  • Hoonved-Perlav-Euro Soap
  • Inoxpran-Lumenflon
  • Eorotex-Magniflex-Mevic
  • Mareno-Wilier Triestina
  • Metauro Mobili-Pinarello
  • Sammontana-Campagnolo
  • Termolan-Galli
  • Vivi-Benotto
  • Wolber-Spidel

Classification Leadership:

The 1983 Giro d'Italia awarded the leader of the General Classification the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey). The time for each stage finish was adjusted for time bonuses to the first three finishers on “mass-start” stages.

Race Summary:

Prologue- Originally scheduled for an 8 km Individual Time Trial, the stage had to be cancelled when striking workers protested by blocking the racecourse.

Stage 4- a controversial sprint came on the fourth stage, when GC contenders Giuseppe Saronni and Moreno Argentin bumped coming through a narrow corner 105 meters from the finish line. Saronni put his hand on Argentin and went on to win the sprint. Saronni’s first “time bonus” for the stage win came on stage 4.

Stage 7- The seventh stage was 216 km from Campitello to Salerno, there were two rated climbs, which allowed Marino Lejarreta, Lucien Van Impe, and Jostein Wilmann to breakaway. Just over three kilometers from the finish all three crashed. Delayed the chasers caught and enabled a large sprint finish. Moreno Argentin took the stage win, but Saronni’s third place earned him another time and the race lead.

Stage 20 (Cima Coppi): The twentieth stage the 1983 Giro d’Italia was a monster. It was 169 km from Selva di Val Gardena to Arabba and featured five major mountain climbs: Campolongo (1st), Pordoi (Cima Coppi), Sella, Gardena andagain Campolongo (2nd). Roberto Visentini, second place in the GC, broke away on the Pordoi with Marino Lejarreta. Over the summit of the climb Lejarreta crossed first and won the Cima Coppi. Alessandro Paganessi attacked on the next climb, the Sella and rode away to the stage win. Lejarreta faded, finishing in sixth place, 7’47” behind the stage winner.

Stage 22- With three stage wins for Saronni, the Italian built enough of a lead to beat Visentini by 1’07” in Milan. Giuseppe Saronni also easily won the Points Jersey.

SPECIAL NOTE: Roberto Visentini complained that his actual race time was faster than Saronni’s and without the stage time bonuses Saronni would have lost the Giro to Visentini by 48 seconds. Saronni had a total of 3’20” in time bonuses and Visentini only 1’25”.
