Moser-Fignon: a Controversial Battle to the End!
The 1984 Giro d'Italia was the 67th running of Italy’s Grand race.
Frenchman Laurent Fignon, the 1983 Tour de France Champion, came to the Giro d’Italia as the main threat to Italy’s two main favorites Francesco Moser and defending Giro Champion Giuseppe Saronni.
The 1984 racecourse was relatively flat, which favored the two Italians. Fignon needed to excel in the mountain stages to have a chance.

Special Note: Robin Morton, the team manager of the Gianna-Motta-Linea MD team, was the first female team manager ever in the Giro d'Italia.
Race Summary:
Prologue-Francesco Moser wore the first Maglia Rosa after his stage win in the 5 km Prologue Time Trial.
Stage 1: Fignon took the Maglia Rosa after a Renault-Elf Team Time Trial stage win for four stages.
Stage 5: Moser distanced the bonking Frenchman on gradual stage 5 climb to the summit of the Block Haus. Moser held the Giro until the mountainous twentieth stage.
Special Note: Controversy abounded during the Giro. After being pushed up multiple climbs Francesco Moser was accused by numerous contenders of receiving favorable treatment by the Italian organizers and race officials.
Stage 19: The toughest climb in the race, the Stelvio, was cancelled because of snow even though the photos showed it was perfectly passable. On the climb of the Selva di Val Gardena Fignon’s breakaway group gained enough time to warrant a team car to support the escape. Officials denied the request to pass the Moser group. When Fignon had a chain problem there was no team car to help.
Stage 20: Stage 19’s difficulties aside, Fignon fought back with a brilliant breakaway on the hardest mountain stage. He took back the Maglia Rosa with 2 stages to go. His race lead was 1’21” going into the final stage Individual Time Trial.
Stage 20 (Cima Coppi): In 1984 the Giro’s twentieth stage featured the parcours of the previous year. There were the same 5 major mountain climbs: Campolongo (1st passage), Pordoi (Cima Coppi), Sella, Gardena andagain Campolongo (2nd passage). Frenchman Laurent Fignon escaped solo on the Pordoi and would not be caught. He rolled into Arabba 2’19” ahead of Francesco Moser and took back the Maglia Rosa.
Stage 22-During the ITTs on the final stage a TV helicopter flew in a down-draft position that gave Moser a favorable tailwind. Despite a puncture Francesco Moser could not be stopped. He was a more experienced in the time trial and gained the stage win by 2’24”. He captured the controversial and tensely fought General Classification by 1’03”. The 1984 Giro d’Italia would be Moser’s only Grand Tour victory.
POST-GIRO NOTES:
Italian champion Felice Gimondi stated that Laurent Fignon lost the Giro because of 3 mistakes:
- Fignon tried to set the pace on the Block Haus climb before bonking.
|
- He tried to win the sprint into Foggio by jumping past Moser and stage winner Moreno Argentine from 800 meters.
|
- He tried to follow stage winner Roberto Visentini on the climb to Lerici in too big a gear.
|
Gimondi: “These are not errors of a Giro Champion, they are errors of a youth.”
