Hinault Beat Moser with Help from LeMond

The 1985 Giro d’Italia marked the third participation and third Giro victory for French superstar Bernard Hinault. The General Classification battle was between 1984 Giro champion Francesco Moser and Hinault.

General Classification

Young American Greg LeMond provided his La Vie Claire teammate Hinault with excellent support from start to finish. Moser tried every move possible, but Hinault, LeMond and a powerful La Vie Claire team controlled every attack. Hinault's time trialing ability proved to be the difference.

Race Summary:

Prologue-Moser led the race for the first two days after winning the opening prologue ITT. He lost the lead to Giuseppe Saronni after his team won the stage three Team Time Trial.

Stage 4: the Giro’s fourth stage saw Roberto Visentini gain sufficient time on the GC contenders. He took the race leader's Maglia Rosa.

Stage 12: Roberto Visentini held the race lead for eight days before losing it to Hinault after the ITT on stage 12. The twelfth stage was 38 km Individual Time Trial. Hinault used a superior race against the clock and won the stage by 53” over Moser and 1’42” on race leader Visentini. Hinault's time gains were enough to give him the race lead by 1’14”.

Stage 15: A twenty-man breakaway formed and rode most of the stage off the front. With 10 km to go the breakaway was caught. When the stage passed the 5 km to go banner, another four-rider attack group formed. 7-Eleven's Ron Kiefel slipped away and won the stage! Kiefel became the first American to win a stage in the Giro on fifteenth stage from L'Aquila to Perugia (208 km).

Stage 19 (Cima Coppi): The nineteenth stage was 247 km from Domodossola to St. Vincent and featured 2 major mountain climbs, the Passo dei Sempione and Gran San Bernardo. Before the stage race director announced that the last six kilometers of the Gran San Bernardo (the steepest part) would be removed. On the shortened stage Colombian climber Reynel Montoya attacked the Passo dei Sempione and rode across the summit to win the Cima Coppi.

Stage 19: After losing a considerable amount of time during stage 16 ITT former race leader Roberto Visentini abandoned the race during the nineteenth stage.

Stage 22: Hinault then successfully defended his lead through the Alpine climbing stages. Bernard Hinault rolled across the final stage finish line in Lucca to claim a 1’08” Giro d’Italia victory over Francesco Moser.
