Race Summary:
Prologue: the Giro began with a 4 km Prologue through the streets of San Remo. Defending Giro Champion (Stephen Roche’s teammate) Roberto Visentini won the Prologue by two tenths of a second over Canadian Steve Bauer. Visentini gained the first Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey) of 1987.
Stage 3: Roche took the overall lead after his team, Carrera Jeans-Vagabond, won the third stage’s Team Time Trial.
Stage 1 to 14: Roche and Visentini traded the race lead three times through the first fourteen stages. Visentini regained the race lead after the thirteenth stage Individual Time Trial.
Stage 15: On the fifteenth stage the race exploded in the Dolomites with a tired Visentini in the Maglia Rosa. The 224 km stage to Sappada saw the race leader struggle with the pace on every climb. Roche broke away from teammate and race leader Visentini, despite team orders. Roche was able to hold onto his breakaway group and left his fading teammate. The Maglia Rosa returned to Roche.
SPECIAL NOTE: Roche's actions, taking the race lead away from Visentini and disobeying team commands, earned the hatred of the Italian tifosi.
Stage 16: (Cima Coppi): The sixteenth stage included five categorized climbs (Croce Comelico, Gardena, Sella, Passo Pordoi, and the Marmolada) before concluding in the City of Canazei.
Visentini tried multiple attacks on the slopes of the Marmolada; but Roche marked all his moves. Van Der Velde broke away on the descent of the Pordoi Pass and bridged the gap to the leaders. The Dutchman won his second consecutive stage in Canazei.
Stage 17: Harsh weather greeted the final stage in the Dolomites Mountains. Three-riders Marco Vitali, Alessandro Paganessi, and Marco Giovannetti broke away from the apathetic main group of GC contenders. Vitali won the stage +8’37” before the elites of the race.
Stage 21: On the twenty-first stage the GC contenders stayed together until the final climb to the summit-finish in Pila. With 12 km to go Marino Lejarreta was the first to attack and seven riders were able to join the breakaway. The group now included Robert Millar and Roche. The group worked well together until the final kilometer. With over 300 mt to go Millar launched a sprint that won him the stage. The Brit moved into second place on the GC.
Stage 22: The final stage was a 32 km Individual Time Trial. Visentini, who had crashed on stage 21, did not start the ITT and abandoned the race. Roche won the stage and the overall race. Roche became the first Irishman to win the Giro d'Italia.
SPECIAL NOTE: Stephen Roche became the first ever Irish winner of the Giro. His stellar racing in 1987 continued with a hard-fought victory in the Tour de France and a huge sprint win in the World Championship Road Race. Roche tied the record of Eddy Merckx with a Giro, Tour, and WCRR victory in the same year!!!
