Chiappucci’s Relentless Attacking Can NOT Crack Indurain

The 1992 Giro d'Italia marked the 75th edition of Italy’s Grand race.

General Classification

The arrival of Spaniard Miguel Indurain as a superstar began with a victory in the 1991 Tour de France. Big Mig came to the 1992 Giro d’Italia to face a group of talented Italian riders.

Teams:

  • Amore & Vita-Fanini
  • Ariostea-Ceramiche
  • Banesto
  • Carrera Jeans-Vagabond
  • Castorama-Raleigh
  • Lotus-Festina
  • Lampre-Colnago
  • Gatorade-Chateau d'Ax
  • Italbonifica-Navigare
  • Jolly Componibili-Club 88
  • Mercatone Uno-Zucchini
  • GB-MG Maglificio-Bianchi
  • Motorola
  • ONCE-Look-Mavic
  • Postobon-Manzana-Ryalcao
  • Seur

  • Tulip Computers-Koga
  • Z-LeMond
  • ZG Mobili-Bottecchia

Each team sent a team of nine riders.

Race Summary:

Prologue: Frenchman Thierry Marie won the short (8 km) opening stage and became the first to wear the race leader's Maglia Rosa. He held the race lead through stage 2, when Miguel Indurain took the race lead for good.

Stage 3: After Indurain won the 38 km individual time trial on stage 3 he put on his first Maglia Rosa of 1992.

Stage 9: He gained a decisive advantage on stage 9 finishing climb to Monte Terminillo by dropping all the major GC contenders. The most important gain was +30” on superior climber Claudio Chiappucci.

Stage 16: (Cima Coppi): The fourteenth stage of the 1992 Giro d’Italia featured 3 major climbs: Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi (Cima Coppi) and Monte Bondone (x2). Claudio Chiappucci won the Cima Coppi at the summit of the Pordoi. Miguel Indurain dominated this year’s Giro. He rode well in control of the GC. The Spaniard was solidly riding in the breakaway at the summit of the Cima Coppi. He rode defensively, continually marked the aggressively attacking duo, Chiappucci (3rd in the GC) and Franco Chioccioli (7th). His efforts gained him the Giro victory.

Stage 19: The always aggressive Chiappucci was not done and attacked the race leader incessantly on the final climbing stage 19 to Verbania. Indurain did not crack and matched every move.

Stage 21: To cap his Giro victory Indurain won the final individual time trial into Milan, catching and passing his 3-minute man… Claudio Chiappucci.

SPECIAL NOTE: Miguel Indurain won the Giro in 1992 to set-up his first of two “Giro/Tour” double victories in the same year.

POST-GIRO NOTE:

Grand French Champion Laurent Fignon raced his final Giro d’Italia. He won the Giro in 1989 and finished 37th overall in 1992. Fignon retired as a professional cyclist late in 1993. Sadly, he passed away in 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
