Gardier Solos to Victory
The 23rd edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege took place on May 25, 1933.
The 1927 winner of the amateur Tour of Belgium, Francois Gardier broke away solo from the peloton in a cold Ardennes rain.
Francois Gardier (Depas) broke away and rode alone into finish 2’16” ahead of a hard charging 4-rider group. Gardier, a resident of Liege, secured a grand L-B-L victory.
René Dewolf (Van Hauwaert) and Albert Bolly (Individual) finished second and third, respectively.
SPECIAL NOTE: Gardier became the fifth Liege native to win La Doyenne. He followed Léon Houa (1892, 1893 and 1894), Victor Fastre (1909), Dieudonne Smets (1926), and Ernest Mottard (1928).
