  • January 23 - Zika Virus Outbreak: Zika virus outbreak in Brazil prompts Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Jamaica to recommend women delay pregnancies for up to 2 years. The World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency due to the Zika virus, which was linked to severe birth defects in babies born to infected mothers. The outbreak primarily affected countries in South and Central America.

  • June 23 - Brexit Referendum: the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, a decision that had profound implications for both the UK and the EU.

  • March 24 - Bosnian Serb politician Radovan Karadžić is found guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes during the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. He was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment.

  • July 25 - Verizon announced the $4.83 billion purchase of Yahoo.

  • August 12 - Cannes became the first French resort to ban the burkini (look it up!).

  • August 13 - American swimmer Michael Phelps ends his career at the Rio Olympics as part of the winning 4x100 medley relay, his record 23rd gold medal
  • November 8 - U.S. Presidential Election: Donald Trump was elected as the 45th President of the United States, defeating Hillary Clinton, with an Electoral College victory of 304-227.

Notable Deaths -

* World Road Race Champion / Vuelta a Espana Champion: Rudi Altig (Ger) (1937-2016) German professional track and road racing cyclist who won the 1962 Vuelta a Espana and the 1966 World RR Championship. After his retirement from cycling, he worked as a television commentator. He died at 79.

David Duffield (1931-2016) British commentator on Eurosport working mainly on the channel's professional cycling coverage for many years. In the 1950s Duffield was an accomplished amateur cyclist, who specialized on the tricycle. He earned the trike 100-mile record, and the “UK End-to-End” record in 1956.

* World Road Race Champion / Tour de France Champion: Ferdi Kübler (Sui) (1919-2016) Swiss cyclist with 71 (!) professional victories, including the 1950 Tour de France and the 1951 World Road Race Championship. He died at 97.

Muhammad Ali (1942-2016) American boxing legend (world heavyweight champion 1964-70, and 70-79), died of respiratory illness at 74.

Gordie Howe (1928-2016) Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame right wing, who was a 23-time NHL All Star. He played for Detroit Red Wings (NHL) and Houston Aeros (WHA). He died of a stroke at 88.

Gene Wilder (1933-2016) American actor (Blazing Saddles; Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; Silver Streak; Young Frankenstein), died at the age of 83.

Arnold Palmer (1929-2016) Superstar American golfer won 7 major titles, 62 PGA Tour titles from 1955 to 1973, and the Masters Tournament in 1958, 60, 62, 64, died of heart failure at 87.
