The race came alive on the climb of the Kwaremont. A group of five Belgians formed on the climb and escaped the peloton. Jan Mertens (Securitas), August Mortelmans (Touring-Pirelli), Louis Delannoy (Securitas), Lucien Buysse (Automoto), and Armand Van Bruaene (La Nordiste) rode well together and stayed clear to the finish.
Talented Belgian sprinter Jan Mertens, a 1927 stage winner in the Tour of Belgium, led the breakaway onto the streets of Wetteren to battle for the victory. Mertens outsprinted August Mortelmans, and Louis Delannoy to claim the biggest victory of his career.
SPECIAL NOTE: For the first time Flanders organizers eliminated the velodrome finishes in favor of the streets of Wetteren (city southeast of Gent).
